BACKGROUND

We now understand that The Safe System Approach itself is built upon two fundamental facts:

> People make mistakes when using the road whether they be drivers, riders or pedestrians;

 > If they are involved in a collision, they are vulnerable to being killed or seriously injured.

The Safe System places the human at its centre working towards a belief that every road death or serious injury is preventable by:

> Designing our road system so its features are forgiving in the event of a crash;

> Training road users to both use the roads in the proper manner or know how to avoid becoming entangled in an incident;

> Designing vehicles which will both react in a positive way when colliding with another person or object along with developing technologies which respond much quicker than the human can when things start to go wrong.

 In order to achieve this, we need to be proactive as well as reactive adopting health & Safety principles to our activity

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This event of a conference style nature is for any person who is involved in the practice and promotion of road safety in terms of casualty reduction, reducing the risk to road users and making the environment smarter with active travel, reduction in CO2 emissions and innovation in mind.

Through a series of presentations, interactive sessions and discussions we will explore interventions designed to make our road network, road users and vehicles safer.

It will be of special interest to those in the areas of Education, Training, Enforcement, Engineering, Collision Investigation, Fleet, Logistics and Transport Management and Road Safety Audit etc as well as those who have managerial responsibility for a workforce who drive for their business and will appeal to those working in the private, commercial, statutory and voluntary sectors. It will also be valuable for thoughts that lead within the community and people who have a Health and Safety or Personnel/Human Resources responsibility. There is also a place for members of the public who have a genuine interest in the safety of our environment and the manner in which the roads are used
